You’ve packed your clothes, laptop, favorite snacks, and maybe a photo from home. But have you packed the spiritual essentials that will carry you through this next season?

College is more than a new beginning. It’s a turning point—one where your choices can shape your future and your faith. At Newman Connection, we help you stay connected to your Catholic identity, even as everything around you changes.

Here are ten things to pack—not in your suitcase, but in your soul—as you step into college life with purpose and grace.

    1. A Daily Prayer Habit

Before the group chats, exams, and late-night pizza runs—start your day with God. Even a short prayer each morning or evening can re-center your heart. Just pause for a moment, put your head down, and say, “Jesus, I trust in You.” Prayer isn’t about perfection; it’s about presence. Make it a habit, and let it ground you.
    2. A Rosary (and the Courage to Pray It)

Mary is your mother, your advocate, and your guide. The Rosary is a powerful tool for peace and clarity during stress. Keep one in your backpack or car, and set an alarm on your phone for downtime as a reminder to pray your Rosary. You’ll be surprised how often you reach for it.
    3. A Relationship with Jesus in the Eucharist

The Eucharist isn’t just a Sunday obligation—it’s your lifeline. Find a local Mass on or near campus (check out your school’s campus ministry here). Go even when it’s hard. He is there, waiting to give you strength, direction, and peace.
    4. A Bible You’ll Actually Use

Don’t leave your Bible behind—it’s the ultimate guidebook. Highlight it. Scribble in the margins. Let God speak to your heart through His Word. The Gospels or Psalms are always a good entry point if you're unsure where to start. If you need some help adding it to your routine, try Bible in a Year with Father Mike Schmitz from Ascension Press.
    5. A Heart Open to God’s Will

College involves big decisions—majors, internships, relationships, and careers. Invite God into them. “Lord, what do You want for my life?” It’s a bold prayer, but it leads to real freedom.
    6. A Faith Community

You weren’t made to walk alone. Faith grows in relationship, with Christ and with others. Seek out your local Newman Center or Catholic campus ministry. Attend events. Say yes to the small group. Show up, even when it’s awkward, because it won’t be awkward for long. That’s where the connection begins. 1. A Spirit of Curiosity and Humility

Your faith isn’t fragile. College is a place of questions—so bring yours. But anchor your exploration in the truth and beauty of the Church. Lean into Catholic teaching, and don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know, but I want to learn.” If you have lots of questions, schedule a time to meet with your Newman Center’s priest or campus minister. They are there to help you!
    2. The Courage to Be Countercultural

Living your faith may make you stand out. That’s not a weakness—it’s a witness. Don’t be afraid to be different. Choose what’s good and true with gentleness, confidence, and love. The world needs your light. Having a good Catholic community surrounding you helps you have this courage and gives you the boost you need when things get tough.
    3. A Habit of Confession

Don’t carry guilt. Unpack it at the foot of the Cross. Monthly confession is a great rhythm—it’s not about shame, but healing. This sacrament will help you stay rooted and free, no matter what the semester brings. Here is a great examination of conscience guide to help you prepare.
    4. A Heart for Service

You’re not just at college for yourself. Look for ways to love others through your time, presence, and talents. Whether helping a classmate, joining a service trip, or being a good roommate, service keeps your faith alive.
