10 Things to Know Before You Go to Adoration

Adoration can feel simple on the surface — quiet, still, just you and Jesus — but if you’ve never been before, it can also feel a little uncertain. What do you do? What do you say? What’s “supposed” to happen?

The truth is, Adoration isn’t about getting it perfect. It’s about showing up. It’s about learning how to be with God in a world that rarely slows down long enough to listen.

That’s why this guide exists: to walk with you through 10 things to know before you go to Adoration, so you can enter with peace rather than pressure.

    1. You do not have to be perfect to come.

Adoration is not for people who have everything figured out. It is for anyone who wants to spend time with Jesus.

    Jesus invites everyone:

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”
    Matthew 11:28

    2. You might not know what to do. That is okay.

Many people feel unsure the first time they go to Adoration. There is no complicated formula. Just begin by sitting quietly with the Lord.

    3. Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist.

Catholics believe that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist.

    The Church teaches:

“In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ… are truly, really, and substantially contained.”
Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1374

    4. Silence is part of the prayer.

Adoration is usually quiet. Silence helps us listen to God.

“Be still and know that I am God.”
    Psalm 46:10

    5. You can talk to Jesus about anything.

Bring your whole life to prayer.

You can talk to God about school, friendships, family, struggles, decisions, and hopes for the future.

    6. Distractions are normal.

    Everyone gets distracted in prayer.

“To set about hunting down distractions would be to fall into their trap.”
Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2729

When distractions happen, gently return your attention to the Lord.

    7. You do not have to feel anything.

Prayer is not about emotions. Sometimes prayer feels peaceful. Other times it feels ordinary. God is present in both.

    8. Scripture can guide your prayer.

Many people bring a Bible to Adoration and pray with a short passage.

    9. Even a few minutes matters.

You do not have to stay for a full hour. Some people come for a few minutes, others longer. What matters most is spending time with the Lord.

    10. Jesus is already waiting for you.

Adoration is not about trying to reach God. It is about responding to the God who is already present.

“I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
    Matthew 28:20

Adoration doesn’t require the right words, the perfect posture, or a deep theological background. It simply invites you to be present, and over time, what may begin as unfamiliar can become one of the most grounding rhythms of your faith. As you step into this practice, remember you are not doing it alone. The Church has always been a place where people learn how to pray, grow, and carry their faith into every new season of life. That’s the heart behind the Faith Forward movement from Newman Connection—helping students stay connected to Christ and His Church as they move from one chapter to the next, so moments like Adoration don’t stay in the chapel but shape how faith is lived out long after you leave.

Resources like this exist because of the generosity of our donors. Every guide we create, every student we help connect, and every step forward in faith is made possible by people who choose to invest in keeping young people close to the Church.

If this resource has helped you, or if you believe in helping students encounter Christ and stay connected to their faith, we invite you to become a donor. Your support makes it possible for more students to step into Adoration with confidence and into their future with a living, connected faith.
