For many college students, finding a community where they feel known and supported can make all the difference. At the University of California, Berkeley, Newman Hall–Holy Spirit Parish has been creating that space for Catholic students for more than a century — helping students encounter Christ, grow in their faith, and build friendships rooted in the Gospel.
Located just steps from campus, Newman Hall serves as a home for UC Berkeley students, students from nearby campuses, and the broader Berkeley community. Its mission is simple but powerful: create a place where students can grow into ownership of their faith while walking alongside others who are seeking Christ.
A Catholic Community Rooted in History

Newman Hall’s story began in the late 1800s when Catholic students at UC Berkeley desired a community where they could grow socially, intellectually, and spiritually. Those students officially founded the Newman Club on December 8, 1899, beginning a legacy of Catholic presence at one of the nation’s most influential universities.
Over the decades, Newman Hall has continued adapting to meet the needs of generations of students. Today, the ministry carries forward that same mission: creating a place where students can encounter Christ while navigating the challenges and opportunities of college life.
More Than a Building: A Place Where Students Belong

College can be an exciting season, but it can also be a time when students feel disconnected or uncertain. Newman Hall recognizes that faith is not meant to be lived alone.
The ministry describes itself as a community focused on “encountering Our Lord Jesus Christ through prayer and the sacraments while forming lifelong friendships with fellow students.”
Through student leadership, faith formation, prayer opportunities, and community events, students are invited to take an active role in building a Catholic community on campus. Newman Hall’s Student Ministry Team is made up of student leaders who organize events and projects while striving “to build, serve, and nourish a community rooted in Christ through living and sharing the joy of the Gospel.”
Whether it is gathering for prayer, participating in formation opportunities, serving others, or simply sharing a meal with friends, Newman Hall gives students a place to continue growing in faith throughout their college years.
Formation That Meets Students Where They Are
One of Newman Hall’s strengths is its commitment to helping students deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith.
The ministry’s Faith Formation Committee works to support students in knowing, loving, and defending their faith while accompanying those who are exploring Catholic teaching or returning to the Church.
For students at a university known for academic curiosity and intellectual exploration, Newman Hall provides a place where faith and reason can come together — encouraging students to ask questions, seek truth, and grow closer to Christ.
A Legacy Continuing Into the Future

Newman Hall is currently entering a new chapter while honoring its rich history. After more than a century of Paulist leadership, the ministry transitioned to Dominican leadership in 2024, bringing the Dominicans’ tradition of preaching, intellectual formation, and theological depth into the community.
Today, Newman Hall continues serving UC Berkeley students with a vision focused on forming disciples and building a community where students know they belong.
“It’s an exciting privilege to have my parish commissioned with such a dynamic campus ministry to a world-class university like Berkeley right down the street and to support the spiritual growth of our students," says Rob Hopcke, Co-Chair, Parish Advancement at Newman Hall. "They’re serious about their faith, smart, funny, and engaged, which means every day, the diverse community here at Newman-Holy Spirit literally gets to witness to the future of the Catholic Church coming into being.”
Why Catholic Campus Ministry Matters
The college years are often when students begin making decisions that shape the rest of their lives — including the role faith will play in their future.
Newman Hall shows the importance of having a Catholic community available during this pivotal season. A campus ministry is more than a place to attend Mass; it is a community where students find friendships, mentors, opportunities to serve, and a deeper relationship with Christ.
Every Catholic student deserves the chance to find that community wherever they go.
At Newman Connection, we believe every student should arrive on campus already connected to a Catholic community that will walk with them throughout college and beyond. Through the Faith Forward movement, we are working to connect more Catholic students with campus ministries like Newman Hall so they can find a place where they are known, supported, and strengthened in their faith.
