Palm Sunday is one of the most meaningful days of the liturgical year. It marks the beginning of Holy Week and commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, when crowds waved palm branches and proclaimed Him King.

But for many Catholics, there’s another tradition tied to this day: learning how to fold a palm cross.

Whether you’ve seen them handed out after Mass, palm crosses are a simple yet powerful reminder of Christ’s sacrifice—and a beautiful way to carry your faith into the rest of Lent and beyond.

Why Do Catholics Fold Palm Crosses?

Palm branches symbolize victory, peace, and eternal life. When we fold them into crosses, we connect that victory directly to the Cross—where Jesus gave everything for us.

Keeping a palm cross in your home, car, or prayer space serves as a quiet reminder:

    • Christ is King
    • His sacrifice is personal
    • Holy Week is an invitation to walk with Him

    What You’ll Need

    • A blessed palm branch (long and flexible works best)
    • A little patience (it gets easier with practice!)

Step-by-Step: How to Fold a Palm Cross

step-by-step guide on how to fold a palm cross

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. Start with a right angle

Hold the palm upright and bend the top down to form a 90° angle.
This creates the top of your cross.

    2. Flip it over

Turn the palm over in your hand.
This sets up the center knot (this step is key)

    3. Wrap the arm behind

Take the long horizontal section and wrap it behind the vertical strip to form a loop.

You should now see a small opening forming.

    4. Pull the top through the loop

Take the top section and bring it down through that loop, then pull it snug.

This creates the center knot of the cross

    5. Make the arms

    Using the remaining length:

    • Fold one side across to form a horizontal arm
    • Adjust both sides so they’re even

The cross shape should now be clearly visible.

    6. Secure with one wrap

    Take the remaining strip and:

    • Bring it across the front
    • Wrap it once around the back

This stabilizes the center (no weaving needed)

    7. Tuck to finish

Slide the remaining end into the center fold or behind the cross to lock everything in place.

    8. Adjust and tighten

    • Straighten the top
    • Even out the arms
    • Pull gently to tighten

What to Do with Your Palm Cross

Once you’ve made your cross, don’t just set it aside—let it be a part of your daily life.

    • Place it in your Bible or prayer journal
    • Keep it on your desk or nightstand
    • Give one to a friend who needs encouragement
    • Use it as a conversation starter about your faith

These small acts can turn a simple tradition into a meaningful witness.
